Our Past and Our Future

Aiken Preparatory School was founded as a junior boarding school in 1916 by Mrs. Louise Eustis Hitchcock to prepare boys for entry into leading secondary schools in America. Co-educational since 1989, Aiken Prep today continues the tradition of providing an intimate, structured, and supportive learning environment during the most crucial years of child development. The merger of Aiken Preparatory School and Aiken Day School in 1989, resulted in the continuation of long standing traditions, spirit, and commitment to excellence for day students in four year old kindergarten through grade nine.

In December of 1999, the Board of Trustees approved a major reconfiguration of the programs offered by APS and as of August 2000, APS will continue its tradition of excellence as a day school with the addition of a college preparatory program for grades 10 through 12.

The school celebrates many traditions, and addresses the need to grow and change to meet the needs of today s children and the community in which it exists.

MISSION

Founded in 1916, Aiken Preparatory School, an independent co-educational community, provides a challenging yet nurturing learning environment for a diverse student population: day pupils in four year old kindergarten through twelfth grade. Through both traditional and innovative programs, as well as the careful selection of our faculty, we equip our students for the challenges of college studies and life-long learning. Our curriculum emphasizes the mastery of academic and critical thinking skills. In addition, an accepting and cooperative atmosphere fosters inquiry and curiosity, instills a love for learning, and helps develop a keen sense of self-worth. The Aiken Prep experience contributes to the social, physical, aesthetic, and moral development of each student, reinforcing the values of integrity, respect, generosity, sportsmanship, and responsibility. Aiken Prep is more than a school; it is a home where children may strive to realize the best of their capabilities.

Aiken Prep gives students confidence in doing, encouragement in trying praise in succeeding, discipline when needed, and love and friendship always.
