Company History

A Brief History of Atlantic.Net Internet Services

Atlantic.Net was founded in 1994 in Gainesville,
Florida. Originally a retail computer store known as
ICC Computers, University of Florida students
Manoj “Marty” Puranik and Jose Sanchez established the company with the goal of financing entry into the
emerging Internet access business and providing
connectivity to residents and students in the
Gainesville area. The company quickly developed a
reputation for quality and service that remains its
core business philosophy today.

In 1995, ICC Computers launched one of North Florida’s
first commercial Internet services. The company ceased retail operations in the spring of 1996 to focus solely on Internet connectivity. Later that year, ICC Computers made its first acquisition of a smaller competitor and began expanding its network across north Florida.

In 1997, ICC Computers changed its name to Atlantic.Net and moved the corporate headquarters to a 5,000-square-foot office in Gainesville’s landmark Bank of America building. The company began to grow rapidly, and revenues doubled for the second year in a row. From 1998 through 2000, Atlantic.Net extended its network across the southeastern United States, enhanced its Internet service product line and continued to make acquisitions, while revenues doubled or tripled annually.

Atlantic.Net was named to the Florida 100, recognizing the state’s 100 fastest-growing private companies, for the first time in 1998. For the past four years, Atlantic.Net has been named to the Florida 100 list. In 2000 and 2001, the company also made Inc magazine’s list of the 500 fastest-growing privately held companies in the nation, ranking number 223 in 2001.

Today, Atlantic.Net is a national competitor in both the telecommunications and Internet services industries. The company’s product line includes long distance service, DSL, ISDN and dial-up access, fractional T-1 through DS-3 connectivity, true private networks, e-commerce, Web hosting and Web design. Atlantic.Net, whose staff has grown to more than 100 employees, remains under the leadership of President and CEO Marty Puranik.
