ISDN FOR BUSINESS: OVERVIEW

WHAT IS ISDN?
ISDN is an all-digital telephone/telecommunications network which carries voice, data, and video over existing telephone network infrastructure. It is designed to provide a single interface for hooking up a phone, fax machine, PC, etc. In case you're wondering, it stands for Integrated Services Digital Network.
WHY ISDN FOR OUR BUSINESS?

  • Superfast connectivity with an "always-on" feel - no waiting for dialing in, connecting, verifying...
  • Cost-effective alternative to expensive leased lines.
  • Connects your LAN to the internet transparently
  • Much Higher-speed alternative to analog dial-up service.
  • High-performance access to large, graphical files.
HOW FAST IS IT, REALLY?

Dialup 56K connection - up to 5Kbytes/sec (average: 2-4K)
Digital (ISDN) 64K connection - up to 8Kbytes/sec (average: 5-7K)
Digital (ISDN) 128K connection - up to 16Kbytes/sec (average: 12-14K)

WHAT DO I NEED TO GET STARTED?

The Phone Line (ISDN)

ISDN service

All carriers in our main service areas can serve at least a 64K ISDN line. In Columbia, South Carolina, and Aiken/North Augusta/Augusta, SC/GA, we can serve a 128K ISDN line.

Pricing

You will pay two fees, one to your local telephone carrier (RBOC)(Bellsouth, Bell Atlantic/NYNEX, GTE, Sprint/United, etc.), and one to us. Pricing models of these companies are highly complex, and in cases where quality and price are attractive we might opt for a competitor to the main carrier. We will price this in your quote.

Ordering The Service

To eliminate confusion, Duesouth recommends you let us order the service for you. We can do this with your address and phone number, and a Letter of Agency.

Equipment

CISCO 700 or 800-series routers are recommended. We can provide rental units with contract. Street price: $650 - $750.

WORRY-FREE OPTION

Duesouth will provide Customer Premises Equipment for an additional fee.

The "router" plugs into your LAN's ethernet and can assign addresses to your LAN's computers so they can access the 'net invisibly. Beyond that, there's nothing else you need. Setup and configuration are handled by Network Technicians - your router is shipped to you plug and play.
