Daily Life

A typical day for APS boarding students begins at around 6:45 a.m. when the boys rise, shower, and clean their rooms for morning inspection. The academic day commences at 8, following a buffet-style breakfast. Fourth- and fifth-graders eat a buffet-style lunch with their teachers and classmates, while Middle School students eat a family-style meal with a rotating seating arrangement and a faculty member at each table. Lower School hours run from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. for five-year-old kindergarten , and 8 until 3 for grades 1-5. A middle School day includes seven academic class periods, advisory/assembly time, and a mid-morning break; students may receive extra help from teachers during the daily conference period.

When the academic day ends at 3 p.m., all boarders and Middle School day students dress for an hour of organized sports or physical education ending at 4:30. Boarders must then shower and change by 5 p.m. for the first of two supervised study halls. A family-style dinner is served at 6, followed by an hour of free time and another supervised study hall at 7:30. Lights out is at 9 for boys in grades 4 and 5, at 9:30 for boys in grades 6 and 7, and at 10 for boys in grades 8 and 9. Boarders who demonstrate a legitimate reason for additional evening study time may be granted "late lights".
